ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

The Turner County Superintendent said renovations to the high school will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars less than expected.  Crews began removing asbestos and doing repairs to the high school-middle school building last month.

Superintendent Ray Jordan says the project was originally slated to cost a little less than a million dollars, But he said the actual cost will be closer to $600,000.  Most of the project is funded with the state's money.

"Our investment in the renovation locally is only about 45-thousand-dollars.  So we're very pleased we've maximized our percentage of state revenue for the project," said Ray Jordan, Turner County Superintendent.

Jordan said workers are making steady progress, and the building should be ready in time for the school year.

The system has a back-up plan should the work extend into the school year.  That plan would delay the first day of school and shorten holiday breaks during the school year.

And with the school year approaching, the Turner County School system could see increased interest in its online education system this fall.

The program allows home-schooled students to be full-time public school students.  The superintendent said the students have an easier time getting accepted into college with diplomas earned from accredited schools.

They're also able to participate in extracurricular activities offered through the schools.

"We feel like we're offering a world class opportunity for parents who, for whatever reason, have decided to instruct their young people at home, or in a non-traditional environment, and to be able to be provided a free public education," said Jordan.

Children enrolled the online system must take state tests.
