VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Information from the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority-

Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority is hosting the annual "Tools for School Back to School Giveaway" Saturday, where more than 500 book bags and school supplies will be given away.

VLPRA is proud to partner with organizers Chanel Randolph and Nick Harden as well as the Valdosta Fire Department (VFD), the American Red Cross, Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, and Adel South Health District who will together provide the school supplies.

The giveaway benefits local youth who may not have the financial means to shop for the upcoming school year and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The event is more than just a giveaway; it is a celebration with activities for children and parents.  The VFD will have firefighters on hand to speak about fire prevention and the American Red Cross will educate adults about the importance of giving blood.

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College will speak with parents and students about enrolling in college while Adel South Health District will talk about good health.  We will also have a fitness trainer on hand to educate children on combating obesity.  Plus, there is an essay contest with prizes for the contestants.

The "Tools for School Back to School Giveaway" will be held Saturday July 27th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Mildred Hunter Community Center.  The MHCC is located at 509 South Fry Street in Valdosta.  For more information, call the center at 229-259-5407.
