ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany program that helps families escape cycles of poverty continues to grow and help families do great things. The first families to complete the entire Strive2Thrive program are about to graduate.

26-year-old Nakosha Dillard is a recent graduate of Albany State University but she's about to embark on a new journey through Strive2Thrive.

"Oh my God I am so ready to graduate," said Strive2Thrive Circle Leader Nakosha Dillard.

Nakosha came to the Chamber of Commerce where she joined Strive2Thrive in 2011 with hopes of a better life for her and her four year old son Caden.

"I just wanted to get more resources to better myself and the world through professional development, resume writing and another source to where when I am down and out it's a picker upper," said Dillard.

1 out of every 3 people in Albany lives in poverty. Nakosha used her experience in the program as a Circle Leader to empower other families to succeed.

"Having a program like this and having people of the community come in and be informed about it to get more knowledge about it will help get our city out of poverty," said Dillard.

In the programs three year existence, Strive2Thrive has helped 58 low income families

" It's a helping hand not a hand out," said Dillard.

As Nakosha prepares to graduate from the program tomorrow she says she's already doing great things for her family.

"Developed a savings plan and everything so it has helped me a lot," said Dillard.

Nakosha plans to strive in pursuing a Ph.D in Public Health so that she can continue to give back to her community. The Strive2Thrive graduation ceremony will take place at Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
