ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Football players and other athletes from the four Dougherty County high schools are gathered at Albany State University to hear advice on making good life choices from Antonio Leroy and members of the ASU Center for the African American Male.

They young men are mostly 9th and 10th graders from across the city who are getting life lesson from the mentors on such things as underage drinking and avoidance of risky behavior.

They are also being introduced to older mentors who can help them in their formative years, and who can even help them apply for scholarships when they complete their secondary education.

"The action steps and examples that we are trying to set as concerned citizens in our community. To make our environment more just, more safe, and put the good in the good life city," said leader and mentor Antonio Leroy.

Founded in 1988, by Dr. Billy Black and colleagues, the Center for the African American Male was designed to promote positive influence, education and growth.  It seeks to enable students to discover their authentic identities by allowing them to achieve their full potential as scholars and assume leadership roles in the community upon graduation.

Since its inception, CAAM has worked to increase retention, promote positive self image, and engage in mentorship collaborations and through sponsored research provide critical information relating to African American Males in our community.
