LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Lee County's fire and EMS departments are now officially one.

After weeks of debate and analysis of a consultant's studies, County commissioners approved an ordinance merging the services into one Public Safety Department on Tuesday night.

Paramedics will be trained as firefighters. Supporters say the change will save taxpayers money and improve the county's fire protection coverage which could result in lower insurance rates for property owners.
"Our purpose is of course to look out for the protection and safety of the citizens of the County, and of course we want to be good stewards with the County's money, and because the County's money belongs to citizens, anytime we can do it basically we're doing two jobs for the cost of one,” said James Howell, Lee County Fire Department.

The county will begin merging the departments on Wednesday
