Albany housing authority revamping approach towards grant

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany Housing Authority has decided to delay its application for a huge federal grant to bolster its chance of getting the money.

The housing authority has finalized its plan to completely remake the area around McIntosh Homes into a neighborhood called “The Oaks at North Intown”.

They'll spend the next year looking for other public and private investments, potentially including SPLOST revenue

The housing authority will seek community development block grants, grants from charitable foundations, and money from developers.

“A significant part that they grade you on is the screen application, that means what have you done to generate new dollars to bring into this neighborhood and we just don't have those commitments yet, and so we have to work with different partners to get those commitments,” said Dan McCarthy, Albany Housing Authority Director.

If Albany is chosen for the grant, it could mean up to $30 million for the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
