Hospitals across central and south Georgia are forming a collaborative partnership to create a new network of medical facilities.

The alliance between 23 hospitals and roughly 1,700 physicians is part of an effort to prepare for the Affordable Health Care Act.

The goal is to improve health care for patients, while reducing filing and paperwork costs.

The Tift Regional Health System and the Central Georgia Health System started the discussions between hospitals all over the state, and made the former announcement in Greensboro Tuesday.

"I think the business model of health care is certainly changing.  And we believe this organization is going to equip us to deal with this changing health care model that's coming by virtue of the Affordable Care Act," said William Richardson, Tift Regional Health System CEO.

Richardson said the partnerships may help extend some insurance benefits to policy holders traveling between medical facilities.

He said each hospital will remain independent, but will be unified under information exchange through Stratus Healthcare.  He said the new organization could be formed by the end of the year.

The agreement includes the Crisp Regional Hospital, the Coffee Regional Medical Center and the South Georgia Medical Center Health System.
