Blueberries reign as states most valuable fruit crop

Posted: Updated:
LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

The harvest for Georgia's most valuable fruit crop just wrapped up and we're not talking about peaches.

Blueberries took over the title of the state's top fruit in 2005. The gap has grown bigger since the swap in position.

A Lee County grower says the wet weather was far from ideal, but a lot of people still came to his farm on Highway 520 to pick berries.

"Pleased enough that you see that area over here has been cleared, I’m putting in 500 more plants in October, I think people love blueberries, people come here so pleased, because from Albany, it was so close, and they were pleased that I had blueberries,” said Joedy Putnal a blueberry grower.

Georgia is now the country's second leading producer of blueberries.
