Decatur Co. Schools to offer universal free lunches
DECATUR CO., GA (WALB) -
Another south Georgia school system is offering free meals to all students.
The Decatur County Board of Education voted to join the Community Eligibility Option.
For at least the next four years, every elementary, middle, or high school student will have the option of eating breakfast and lunch for free.
"An elementary child, if they ate with us every day, for 180 days, full pay, would be $225 it would cost that family just for that one child to eat. And a middle or a high school student, it was $288 dollars for the whole year." said Nutrition Director Debbie Purcell.
The program was created through the 2010 Federal Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.
Only counties will a high volume of students who would normally receive free or reduced lunches are eligible.
