Albany veteran much improved after call for help

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany Marine Veteran who threatened to go on a hunger strike because he said he was getting poor medical care at the VA clinic in Albany is doing better.

V-A Care coordinators from the Dublin Center have taken over Willie Ross's case.

When we visited his South Albany home Monday, Ross he was walking and clearly stronger.

Two Veterans Administration Care Coordinator program nurses were at his home.

They took over his care and installed a Tele-health Buddy in his home.

Every morning he uses it to transmit his blood pressure and other health information to caregivers in Dublin.

V. A. Care Coordination's Sandra Boiles said "Is a relatively new program that is trying to identify those needs and be able to minimize hospitalization."

Willie Ross said "But I want to thank these two ladies. They did more in a week that the VA did, even though they work for the VA, in a year."

Ross said the V-A Care Coordinators helped him get his medication in order and improved his diet.

A cardiologist at Atlanta's V-A Hospital is coordinating his heart treatment.

Ross said he may one day need a heart transplant, but right now he feels his care is much improved.  And he doesn't plan to go on a hunger strike.
