Albany Police continue national recruiting for officers

Albany Police continue their national recruiting program, trying to hire qualified police officers to fill their force.

A-P-D still has 13 vacancies on the force budgeted for 214 officers.

A-P-D has a full-time recruitment department to attract the best qualified candidates. But they say finding the best people, who can meet their strict drug and criminal background requirements and are truly suited for a law enforcement career is sometimes difficult.

Deputy Chief Donald Frost said "You have to love this. You have to want this. And everybody may want to have some other career or other job. It may not be law enforcement. So in essence we're trying to locate those people who actually have a desire to do this profession."

The starting salary for an Albany police officer is just more than $33,000.
