ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County Commissioners are developing an application process for the use of vacant county buildings after six groups asked to use an abandoned library.

One group hopes to use the South side Branch that was closed down last summer to help prepare high school students for college.  Others also expressed interest in using the building for educational and community based programs.

Commissioners said they want to make sure the process is fair, and need to develop proper procedures to evaluate each applicant objectively.

"Now, ultimately the over arching desire on the part of the committee, and certainly myself, is that we try as much as possible to use that facility for the benefit of the surrounding community," said Gloria Gaines, Dougherty County Commissioner

Gaines was asked to develop the application process.

She said commissioners will determine potential local and state government use of the building before evaluating other applicants.  She also said the vacant building needs greater public awareness before commissioners make their final decision.
