LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

The family of a former Albany business owner, that died after being gunned down inside his store three years ago, is asking for your help to make our communities a better place.

The 3rd annual Walter Phelps Memorial Phun Run and walk will be the first weekend of August, and they're still looking for sponsors and runners to benefit a YMCA youth program.

Phelps died just weeks after he was shot inside their family owned P&P Garden and Hardware Center in July of 2010.

"A very hard working man, you could find him in one of three paces; home work or church, but with his work he chose to reach out and help other people," said Chuck Phelps. "He hired a lot of young people through the years during the summertime, Shelling peas and butter beans."

A year later, family members organized the Walter Phelps foundation and the memorial run to help kids stay engaged, that might not otherwise get the chance.

"Pulling the community together to help children who need a place to go instead of just sitting in the house and playing Xbox, Sony or the game cube, or whatever they're playing," said Chuck Phelps. "Gets them out, gets them some exercise and some character."

All funds benefit YMCA's "Reach for the Stars" Day Camp and their daily transportation, to help teach Christian Principals.

"It gives us an outlet to let people know how you can deal with any tragedy that comes along," said Shirley Phelps. "We need to do something to keep the family together and keep remembrance and help the kids that need help."

The money raised helps extend the program throughout the year. In 2011, they raised enough money to keep it for the summer, then last year it was held through Christmas. This year they're aiming to keep it available even longer.

The Walter Phelps Memorial 5K Phun Run and 1 mile walk will kick-off at 8 AM on Saturday August 3rd and you can register the day of the event. For more information visit the event Facebook page or click here.
