ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As the obesity epidemic continues to grip the nation, health experts say a little daily exercise could save your life.

The Centers for Disease Control said just 30 minutes a day of activity can dramatically reduce the risk of heart disease and associated risks.

Some cities have taken steps to promote healthy living in the face of rising medical costs.  The mayor of New York introduced an ordinance that promotes using stairs in buildings over using elevators.

But health experts a little closer to home said a little exercise can go a long way.

"Research shows that if you can reduce your weight by ten percent, reduce your body weight by ten percent that can cut your risk for chronic disease such as diabetes and heart disease.  So it doesn't have to be massive weight loss, it can be small steps that can definitely prolong your life and contribute to a healthier lifestyle," said Remy Hutchins, Infectious Disease and Health Promotions Coordinator.

Hutchins said the thirty minutes can be broken up into different parts of the day, just so long as people get some physical activity.

She said something as easy as parking further from the door at the grocery store can contribute to extra exercise.

She also said the Jackson height wellness center at 1100 N. Jordan Street offers free gym memberships.  They're open from 7 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 4 – 7 p.m. during the week.  Call (229) 430-3621 for more information on their memberships.
