ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

A man who dedicated his life to saving lives will get a permanent honor in his hometown.

A road frequently traveled by Randall Whiddon himself, will be soon be named Randall Whiddon Drive.

After Whiddon's death, Ashburn Mayor Jim Hedges, says it didn't take long to come up with an idea to recognize the man he calls his friend.

"Four or five days after his death and I waited until after the funeral services to before going to the residence to speak to his wife," said Mayor Jim Hedges.

Randall Whiddon was a former Turner County EMS director. He was killed in an ambulance crash in June.

Randall Whiddon served Turner County for almost 30 years. The mayor and council members think this is the best way to honor him.

Mayor Hedges took the idea to city council members. They say the vote Thursday night was an easy task.

"I mean there wasn't any question. Everybody was just totally for it. And proud to do it," said Councilman Arthur Eld.

And Councilman Eld says he misses Whiddon who saved many lives in his career including Eld's.

"I was one of those lives he saved. He saved my life 13 years ago. I had a massive heart attack and I'm proud to have this road renamed after him," Councilman Arthur Eld.

The council's vote made Industrial Drive into Randall Whiddon Drive immediately. 9 new street signs will soon bear his name.

The new signs have been ordered. When they come in the city plans to hold a dedication ceremony.
