Henry hosts 28th annual Camp of Champs

Almost thirty years ago, after completing her college career at the University of Tennessee, Darton State head coach Lea Henry decided to return to Albany to host a summer basketball camp.

Since then, it has turned into an annual tradition.

Henry is hosting her 28th Camp of Champs at Deerfield-Windsor this week.

Nearly 60 youngsters are participating in the camp, learning and practicing basketball fundamentals.

"The kids really have a good time," Henry says. "They learn a lot about the fundamentals of the game, but they also get to play games and have fun."

Even after 28 years, it's a week Henry says she still looks forward to.

"We always enjoy this camp. This is the one that kind of started it all of for me, as soon as I finished college," she says. "I always like to come be in the area, and give back to the community."

And Henry says she has no plans of stopping anytime soon.

"I'm still enjoying it," she says. "My husband and I are going all over the country running these camps, and this one is very special to us because we like to give back to the area."

Henry is joined at the camp by several area high school coaches. She says when you have as many talented coaches as Albany does, it makes sense they would work together to advance the game.

"I think Albany has always been known for quality basketball," she says of the level of coaching in the city.  "It's just a great group, and it's good to see that so many people in our community are still around giving back to the game."
