Some Albany students learned about the importance of reading thanks to a special guest from the Dougherty County School Board. Dr. Lane Price spent the morning reading to Albany students at the Litman Summer Reading Program.

The program brings in certified teachers from the community twice a week to read books written by some of the student's favorite authors. Dr. Price says this is a great effort to increase the literacy rate in Albany.

"Our goal is to have every third grader reading at or above third grade level, and so the earlier we can start the better," said Dougherty County School Board Official Dr. Lane Price.

Students also received school supplies and lunch after the reading. This is the last day the program will be offered this summer. The Litman Summer Reading Program has been in place for 14 years. Program officials hope to continue the program next summer.
