Albany moves ahead on dangerous dog ordinance

Albany city commissioners are considering new rules for pit bull owners.

They requested information on how a potential dangerous dog ordinance could restrict pit bulls.  Monday, the citizens advisory committee met to discuss possible new regulations.

The committee is leaning toward a middle of the road ordinance that would require owners to register their dogs which would allow animal control to keep track of them and punish irresponsible owners.

"Some of the models that we looked at have very high fines. Some of the models included taking the dog away immediately if it was unregistered or not kept properly, with no appeal essentially. Whether we would go that far, I don't know, again that's a commission decision," said Wes Smith, Albany's Assistant City Manager.

The committee hopes to present city commissioners with their final report and recommendations in the next month.
