ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany spoke out Saturday about the Worth County Board of Education's decision to discontinue offering services to the students of active duty officers.

16 days before the school doors open in Worth County, the board decided to not allow students who live on the Marine Corp Logistics Base to attend their schools. Base Commander Don Davis says the decision is not sitting well with parents.

"Outrage. I mean they sunk their heart and soul into the Worth County School System. They call it their home. We got kids that are very active in the school. We got kids doing great things in the school," said Col. Don Davis.

Colonel Davis say the 50 plus students affected need more choices in schools. Other school systems, like Dougherty County, say they'll welcome the students with open arms.

"Dr. Mosely has already contacted me and expresses his concern and whatever he can do to help assist us and Lee Co the same way. Again this is a decision that is completely out of character," said Col. Don Davis.

And a decision that Davis says it a complete surprise.

"The folks that made the decision, I want to appeal what that decision means. If it's strictly numbers from what I understand there has to be another way," said Col. Don Davis.

The Worth County Board of Education sent out a news release late Friday afternoon, saying they were suspending the policy after an extensive budgetary review. Board members say the cost of having MCLB students attend Worth County schools was becoming a financial burden.

But Davis says he wants to work through the situation so the students won't have to leave.

"Were very hopeful that folks at Worth County and the school board will reexamine this decision quickly because we don't have a lot of time," said Col. Don Davis.

The agreement between Worth County and the Marine Corps Logistics base has been in place since 2006.

Colonel Davis and his team plan to have a conference with the Worth County Board of Education Monday morning. The policy is suspended and the board can reinstate it, if they choose.
