ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The driver of the semi truck that went airborne and crashed on Slappey Boulevard is recovering Friday. Both the north and south bound lanes are back open now after being closed for several hours.

The crash involved the semi truck and two other vehicles. While the driver is recovering in the hospital, police are investigating the crash.

Albany Police say John Probert of Rebecca was driving west on the Liberty Expressway when his semi truck crossed the median on the bypass, struck guard-rails, then went air-born and landed on Slappey Boulevard.

Police say Probert told them he crashed because he blacked out.

"He's gone to the hospital for further observation so it would be determined by medical personnel to fully get an explanation of what that actually means," said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Department.

Police re-routed traffic for hours cleaning up debris. Some of that debris caused damage to a Chevy Silverado.

"The third vehicle sustained damage after it tried to avoid debris that was left by the semi truck on the Liberty Expressway prior to it landing on Slappey Boulevard," said Phyllis Banks.

The semi wasn't done causing damage once it landed on Slappey. It collided with a Camaro.

"That vehicle collided with the semi after it landed on Slappey Boulevard," said Phyllis Banks.

Police are not sure if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. But they do want drivers to start taking extra precautions when they get behind the wheel of a car.

"We are stunned by the number of fatalities we had thus far this year in such a short period of time. So if people could just pay closer attention as best as possible when their traveling on the roadways," said Phyllis Banks.

Probert was the only person with injuries. The drivers of the other two vehicles were able to walk away without any injuries.

Albany Police says no charges have been filed and the Traffic Unit will continue to investigate the crash. Police closed both Slappey exits at 7:04 a.m. and opened them back up at 10:48 p.m.

John Probert is listed in fair condition at Phoebe Putney Hospital. Police say his semi truck was from a trucking company in Tifton.
