The Dougherty County School Board made a decision that will allow high school student athletes to decide which school zone they will play in for the upcoming school year. The decision mainly affects 10th and 11th grade students to follow zoning guidelines under the Georgia High School Association.
High school student athletes will have the opportunity to indicate if they plan on participating in Georgia High School Association activities in their old or new school zone. This comes after school zones were adjusted in March. School System officials say students will be responsible for their transportation to the school of their choice.
"The ones that are allowed to stay will have to provide their own transportation, but if there is an opportunity for them to ride in their own neighborhood if a bus goes by their school certainly we'll take that on a case by case basis," said Superintendent Dr. David Mosely.
Current high school student athletes must indicate which school zone they will play in by July 26th.
