Sole Brooks Co. crash survivor recovering fast

BROOKS CO., GA (WALB) -

The sole survivor of this week's crash that killed three Brooks County High School football players says he's anxious to get back on the football field.

De'Vron Whitfield returned home Thursday night after being released from Shands Hospital in Florida.

One of the victims, Shawn Waters, was Whitfield's half-brother. Coach Maurice Freeman sat down with Whitfield Thursday. He says the young man is recovering quickly and should be able to play this season in honor of his friends.

"We braced each other, hugged each other, cried. I told him I loved him, he did the same with me. We sat there and talked a little bit, asked him about his injuries. And he asked about the other guys, which shows a lot of class," said Freeman.

This Saturday the football team will be at Harvey's Supermarket in Quitman from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. raising money for the victims' families and Whitfield's medical expenses.
