Flooding causes thousands of dollars of damage for homeowners

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Serious flooding across the CSRA led to major damage for homeowners, such as Edward Udell Wednesday afternoon.

Udell says it only took a few minutes for his home to turn into a soggy mess.

"I came inside and told my wife to start getting stuff up because we don't have much time, maybe five minutes and then we got flooded," Udell, said.

He says after a pipe underneath Biltmore Drive broke, his house started flooding. He says they rushed to save what they could by throwing everything onto couches and tables.

He says about six inches of water quickly filled his house and at 64 years old he had to escape through the back window.

"It was rough getting out that window but I got out," he said.

The storm caused a sinkhole outside Udell's house to grow from the size of a tire to the size of a car, and down the street lightning hit a home.

No one was injured by the storm but Udell says it will take him a long time to recover from it.

"I'm depressed really. I'm at my wits end and I've done all I can think of. My wife says we're going to move," Udell, said.

He says the flooding caused over $40,000 of damage to his home.

Biltmore Drive remains open to drivers but the county is keeping an eye on it. If the sinkhole or a crack in the road grows, they will close the street.
