Auburn's Clark, Parkey named to watch lists

Auburn place kicker Cody Parkey was named to the Lou Groza College Place-Kicker Award Watch List, while Steven Clark was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List on Wednesday.

For the second-straight season, Parkey is among the 30 student-athletes on the Groza Award Watch List, presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. Clark, a two-time Guy Award semifinalist, is one of 25 men on the preliminary list for the award handed out by Augusta Sports Council.

Parkey converted 11-of-14 field goals in 2012 to lead Auburn in scoring. The rising senior was also a perfect 27-for-27 on extra point tries bringing his career PAT total to an impressive 70-of-71 with 142 points scored.

"Being on the Lou Groza preseason watch list is a huge honor," Parkey said. "But at the end of the day, it's about being on the list at the end of the season and I'm training hard and looking forward to a great 2013 season."

The Jupiter, Fla. native ranks fourth all-time in the Auburn record books in field goal percentage with his mark of .750 (24-of-32) and enters his final season on The Plains having converted his last 51 extra point attempts.

Clark averaged 39.8 yards per punt during the 2012 season with 15 punts being downed inside the 20-yard line and only five of his 70 punts were returned.

"It's always an honor to be mentioned among the best at your craft," Clark said. "I'm really looking forward to putting my best on the field this season and helping my team to what I feel can be a special year."

Six punts by the Kansas City, Missouri native went for more than 50 yards during the 2012 season. His long punt was a 54 yarder against LSU.

The 22nd Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, recognizes the three finalists during an early week celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet on December 10th, prior to joining ESPN in Orlando.

The Groza Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.

The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. The Ray Guy Award winner is determined by a national voting body of sports writers, college coaches, sports information directors, and past Ray Guy Award winners. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times a punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage, and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline, and have a positive impact on the team's success.
