QUITMAN, GA (WALB) -

A spokesman at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL says De'Vron Whitfield, the sole survivor of a deadly crash Tuesday morning, is improving in his condition.

Whitfield, a student and football player at Brooks County High School, was with three other players when their SUV slammed into a tree around 9:30 Tuesday morning on North Webster Street in Quitman.

Jicarre Watkins, Shawn Waters and Johnie Parker all died in that crash.

Hospital officials say Whitfield's condition has been upgraded to "fair".

Whitfield was initially airlifted from the crash scene.

Family and friends of the four young victims gathered for a vigil inside the Brooks County High School cafeteria Tuesday night.

All four were described as gentlemen at the event.

The Brooks County School system is working to offer support to any student or staff member who needs it in the wake of the crash.
