QUITMAN, GA (WALB) -

The three young men killed in a fatal crash Tuesday morning were important members of what has been a very successful football program at Brooks County High School.

Jicarre Watkins and Shawn Waters were seniors who started for the Trojans football team for three years. Johnie Parker would have been a junior this year.

Coach Maurice Freeman says he will give his players as much time as they need to grieve.

Current and former players and coaches shook hands, hugged, and reminisced today for the teammates they lost.

"They were all hard working young men. Stayed out of trouble, recalls one player. "[They] did the right things, learning how to be leaders in our school system, in the classroom, and on the football field."

Coach Maurice Freeman says Lineman Jicarre Watkins and running back Shawn Waters were senior leaders with potential futures in the sport.

"Certainly a tragic thing for the families, for this football team, this school system.  And our heart goes out to all of them," says Freeman. "Those were three wonderful kids that I thought nothing less of them being my own sons. We shared a lot of great times together. Very few tough times."

Coach Freeman says there will be no rush to get back on to the field.

"Starting tomorrow, Thursday, and each day after that, we'll have some grief counseling in the high school and the in the weight room," notes Freeman. "And we'll cancel practice until these kids see that they are ready to start back."

Junior running back De'Vron Whitfield remains in critical condition at a Florida hospital.
