South GA community grieves for students after fatal crash

Family and friends of four young victims in a deadly crash gathered outside the Brooks County Board of Education building to console one another Tuesday evening, ahead of a 6 p.m. vigil inside the Brooks County High School cafeteria.

Jicarre Watkins, Shawn Waters and Johnie Parker died when their SUV slammed into a tree around 9:30 Tuesday morning on North Webster Street in Quitman.

Another teammate, De'Vron Whitfield, was critically injured and airlifted from the scene to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL.

Some screamed and cried as they gathered, others passed around tissues.

The boys were leaving football practice, but helped Johnie Parker's God Uncle who works at the school move some furniture before they left.

He says they were true gentlemen and it showed just before they died.

"Great guys, always mannerable, all the kids were very nice very mannerable, very respectful: 'yes sir, no sir'" recalls God Uncle Robby Christian.

17 year old Alexia Gosier says she knew some of the boys since kindergarten.

"They were really outgoing and funny and I really had fun with them in the classrooms," says Gosier. "They always made the classrooms really fun; they talked a lot and played but they also got their work done."

Christian says the community is strong and will overcome the tragedy.

"Prayer will get you through anything, and we're a close knit community so we're going to make it," adds Christian.

He says the boys who died leave behind great legacies.
