Albany 4th celebration deemed a success

Clean up began early Friday morning at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds in Albany after Thursday night's July Fourth celebration. And organizers say the turnout exceeded their expectations, despite some wet weather.

Thousands turned out to celebrate America's birthday last night at the Exchange club Fairgrounds in Albany. Skip Nichols, the Exchange Club Fair Manager says they were proud that the rain didn't deter attendees.

"What a great evening we had. We endured the weather," said Exchange Club Fair Manager Skip Nichols. Business was off to a slow start for vendor Demetrius Martin and the rainy weather destroyed his tent.

"It kind of made things a little bit awkward for me on the business end but other than that last night was a great night," Nichols said.

Crews and vendors were busy this morning, cleaning up after having thousands of families enjoy numerous festivities. "We'll as you look around here you would almost think that nothing was out here yesterday."

Organizers say that cars were backed up all the way here on Gillionville Road towards Slappey and that it took three exits to get three thousand people out. Nichols says the celebration could not have been a success without a certain partnership. "This could not have been done without the joint effort of the city of Albany. We certainly want to thank them for asking us to be apart of this festivity."

The festivities and safe security at the fairgrounds has many vendors saying they'll be back next year. "Oh yes in the future look for me," said Hot dog Vendor Demetrius Martin.

 The Exchange Club says they pride themselves on hosting family oriented activities and look forward to hosting July Fourth Festivities at the fairgrounds next year. The Exchange Club says they plan to partner with the city of Albany again next year for the July Fourth Celebration.

    With Memorial Day around the corner, one Southwest Georgia military fraternity decided to host a blood drive in honor of fallen soldiers and to give back to the community.  Psi Delta Tau Military Fraternity Incorporated held the event at a neighborhood Wal-Mart to help those in need.

    The weather didn't stop one Albany church from having a nice southern barbeque.       St. James Missionary Baptist Church held their third annual 'Unity in the Community BBQ event' Saturday.  They gave away hundreds of food and clothing items.
