Boy with malformation talks and walks after surgery

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A 6 year-old Albany boy is home recovering from brain decompression revision surgery.

Thomas Cooper suffers from Arnold Chiari Malformation, which causes his brain to stick out beneath his skull and puts pressure on his spine.

This malformation left him unable to walk or talk until last month.

In June, he had surgery to remove bone from his skull to relieve some of the pressure off his spine.

Thomas is now able to walk short distances and his speech is improving. His grandmother says he still has a long way to go but fells the surgery is a step in the right direction.

"He can walk from here to the parking lot and back without complaining of his legs hurting, his feet hurting. He can sit up part of the day," said Phoebe Cooper-Wright.

Thomas's grandmother is organizing a Walk Across America for Chiari on September 21 at 9 a.m. here in Albany. People can sign up at Chiari.Org.

The Governor of Georgia and Mayor Hubbard signed a proclamation in honor of Thomas, declaring September, Arnold Chiari Malformation Month.

You can also contact Thomas's grandmother, Phoebe Cooper-Wright at 229-869-6825 for more information about the walk and how you can help.
