VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Fireworks are set to go off in Valdosta Thursday night as scheduled. Valdosta Mall officials expect to have their biggest turn out ever for the 18th annual Spirit of America Celebration.

American flags border Norman Drive in Valdosta ready for the crowds of people who will line the roadway Thursday to watch the fireworks. The Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority will light up the sky around 9:00 p.m.

"The best spot to view the fireworks is going to be somewhere between exit 16 and exit 18 off I-75 and on the east side. So anywhere along that Norman Drive corridor," said Jessica Catlett with VLPRA.

And the fun kicks off at 3:00 p.m. at the Valdosta Mall for the 18th annual Spirit of America Celebration. Officials are expecting more than 10,000 people this fill the parking lot.

"You absolutely can come and attend this event and not spend one dime," said Beth Peagler with Black Crow Media who is sponsoring the event.

There will be a kids play zone, live music, food and games. And when the fireworks go off, county music star JJ Lawhorn will take the stage.

"It'll be a great show. Kids love him, adults love him. And there will be several other bands following him," said Peagler.

And officials say rain or shine the events will go on and the fireworks will go off.

"With the weather forecast, if its raining we may have to wait for a break in the rain, so it may be a little later than normal. It all just depends on the weather," said Catlett.

So bring your poncho, and your umbrella, wear your red, white and blue, and enjoy a free day of events in honor of our independence.
