911 center renovations include texting capabilities

The 911 center in Albany is undergoing reconstruction with more than $1 million in upgrades to help emergency crews respond to calls quickly.

The new center will feature upgraded consoles and state of the art equipment that will allow operators to receive text messages from concerned citizens.

Citizens passed special taxes last year to fund the $2.85 million project. Emergency officials say the renovations will allow 911 operators to have the most up to date technology.

"[It's] A whole new look, just an entire new look, describes Communications Manager Charlotte Floyd. "The consoles, some of the equipment that I had up here came from downstairs when we moved up here back in 2001. It had already been downstairs for quite some time it was going on thirty years old. So all of that will be replaced."

The new center is expected to be completed by late August.
