TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

U.S.D.A. reports estimate Georgia farmers have planted nearly 200,000 fewer acres of peanuts this year.

The Georgia Peanut Commission Executive Director said farmers experienced record harvests in 2012, which generated abundant supplies of high quality peanuts.

Georgia farmers planted an estimated 500-thousand acres of the commodity to balance the large surplus.

The peanut commission predicted less acreage in 2013, and said farmers helped boost acreage by planting peanuts after wheat was harvested earlier this year.

"It's helped get the acreage up a little bit.  We really overdid our reduction at first when we looked at what we planted in the late spring.  But now with putting some behind wheat, it should help us a little bit," said Don Koehler, Georgia Peanut Commission Exec. Dir.

Koehler said strict Chinese tariffs which restricted U.S. peanuts into the country also contributed to a reduction in peanut planting this year.

He also said he's optimistic about the future of one of America's favorite commodities, and said peanuts are looking good even though they were off to a slow start.
