VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The most popular holiday for fireworks is just days away. And with strict firework laws in the Peach Sate, many south Georgians don't know what fireworks are illegal to bring into the state.

It's a holiday dedicated to celebrating our independence, but if you don't follow the law it's a day you could celebrate behind bars. Valdosta Fire Chief J.D. Rice says they'll be out Thursday looking for people lighting off illegal fireworks.

"We are going to confiscate them and you can get up to one year in jail a $1,000 fine," said Rice.

With strict firework laws in Georgia, Rice says the problem is many south Georgians are buying fireworks in Florida and Alabama where the laws are more lenient.

"When you're knowingly going down there, buying fireworks without reading the label and understand what the laws are, and transporting them back into Georgia and using them, that's when we have a problem," said Rice.

In Georgia, basically any fireworks that explode into the air are illegal. Such as, roman candles, bottle rockets, and artillery shells.

However, if you buy them in Florida and light them in Florida, you're safe. But like 11-year-old Jakhary Fail says the bigger the better. "I wish that I could have the big ones."

Just don't pass the Georgia state line if you do light off the big ones.

Chief Rice says last year the fire department had to confiscate fireworks from about a dozen people.
