Locomotive rolls down Waycross street

WAYCROSS, GA -

Information from Okefenokee Technical College-

A strange site greeting morning travelers in Waycross Monday. An out of service locomotive engine made about a half-mile trek Down Carswell Avenue to its new home at Okefenokee Technical College.

Here is a news release from Okefenokee Technical College-

Okefenokee Technical College is receiving a big donation – literally. 68 feet long, 16 feet high, 10 feet wide and weighing in at a mere 390,000pounds.

Progress Rail Services Corporation, the Rail Division of Caterpillar, is donating a fully functional locomotive to OTC to enhance locomotive courses. The locomotive, an Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) SD40, six-axle, fully operational engine, is bright red and proudly displays the Progress Rail Services logo, along with the logo of CSX and Utilco.

The three rail companies teamed up to support OTC rail programs and get Engine 3066 relocated.

The locomotive was restored to operational state by Progress Rail employees at the Patterson manufacturing site. EMD locomotives routinely last 40 years or more, and can be rebuilt reusing 80% of the core components to extend locomotive life.

Okefenokee Technical College (OTC), Progress Rail Services, CSX Transportation, Utilco Railroad Services, Waycross City officials, Mediastream, and Georgia Power Company created a relocation team in December 2012. Preparations for the move have been ongoing since.

Utilco used four 85-ton cranes or pipelayers to lift the locomotive and swing it into position before placing it on track that will be laid on Carswell Avenue. The locomotive then made the .6 mile trip to OTC.

OTC officials say the addition of this locomotive will enable the college to offer unique customized training solutions to rail industry partners throughout the region and beyond.
