44% tax hike passes in Tifton

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Tifton city council members approved a new budget Friday night that raises the millage rate by 3 mils, that's a 44% increase.

For three hours they debated other ways to balance the budget before finally approving the tax hike that will bring in an extra million dollars a year in revenue.

Councilman Chris Parrot voted against it.  He said, "It's gonna hurt folks. I get a lot of calls and talk to people that are on fixed incomes, you know, and everything is higher now, so now they're gonna be paying more for their city services, so it's definitely gonna impact the citizens."

Mayor Jamie Cater also supported more budget cuts instead of the increase.  He said, "We went through a lot of ideas. We tried to balance it without a millage increase. That failed in the vote, so we really worked hard on everything."

Council members Marianna Keesee, Johnny Terrell, and Julie Smith voted for the millage increase.

The budget doesn't include layoffs or furloughs and resumes city contributions to workers retirement plans after a 2-year freeze.
