The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is taking part in, Operation Dry Water, a national effort to reduce accidents on the water starting this weekend.

"Boating under the influence is an epidemic throughout the United States," said Conservation Ranger Greg Wade.

Last year, there were 180 BUI arrests in the state of Georgia last year. Almost 10 percent of them happened at Lake Chehaw. So far this year, 71 people have been arrested.

One May 15th, the BAC limit for boating was reduced to the same level as driving, .08.

Officials say before you boat to be sure to have a sober operator, have all required safety equipment (including life jackets). Also, it is now Georgia law for any child under 13 to wear a life jacket while the boat is in motion.
