FL Youth helps keep Albany beautiful

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

One Florida youth group is spending their summer break in "The Good Life City" this week lending helping hands to keep it beautiful.

Members of Beach United Methodist Church in Jacksonville have joined Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful to clean up parts of town and assist the Second Harvest Food Bank, all with just one goal in mind.

"We're just sharing God's love with everyone," said Leah Putnal, Beach United Methodist Church member.

The 66 members of the group made lines around piles of food at the Second Harvest Food Bank to pack around 600 boxes of meals for families in need.

"There's a lot of hungry people in America, so it's a really good thing," said Putnal. "I didn't know there was going to be this much food, honestly, but I'm glad there's a lot of food because everyone needs to eat."

"This is awesome and I know it's going to help people in need and I think these young people get something out of this today, knowing that they're helping some people that really need some help," said Greg Gause, Beach United Methodist Church member.

They've spent hours out in the sun and in a warehouse to help make sure families don't go unfed and to keep beauty in Albany.

"It's going to be a hot day but I tell you, it's going to be a lot of fun," said Gause.

So far they've also painted the Albany Resource Center, the downtown Art Park to get rid of graffiti and give artists a fresh canvas.

"We don't really know these people," said Putnal. "So it feels like we're doing a really good thing and just being here with our friends makes it even more fun. "

They're spending the day out cleaning up in the yards of senior citizens homes in East Albany and other yards around town.

"I think it's a really cool experience because it kind of changes you forever," said Putnal.

They say they hope folks here will also see their efforts and decide to lend a helping hand for their own communities in the future.
