DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -

A new program is coming to Dougherty County schools to help fight obesity.

Wednesday, board members heard from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.  The privately funded group helps schools battle the obesity epidemic.

Board members voiced their support for the program which will not cost the system anything.  Students and parents can expect to see gradual changes in physical activity and nutrition.

"We're not going to come in and say, if you're having a pizza party, oh that's not allowed. That's not what we do. What we come and do is make sustainable changes that are going to be sustainable for the next 15 to 20 years," said Mike Stubbs, the program director.

The group will target elementary and middle school students the first year.  The free program is offered to public schools across the country with high numbers of students that get free or reduced price lunches.
