ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The new Miss Georgia is back home in south Georgia. Lee County's Carly Mathis was crowned Miss Georgia Saturday in Columbus.

The 22-year-old former Miss Atlanta won a $15,000 scholarship and will represent Georgia in the Miss America pageant.

Her platform is heart health. She wants to bring awareness to high blood pressure and heart disease, the nation's leading cause of death.

"I always wanted to be Miss Georgia. I always wanted to be Miss America. It's been a dream of mine since I was little. So just the fact that it's actually happening is kind of surreal, but it is something that I've been working towards most of my life, and I couldn't be more excited," said Carly Mathis, Miss Georgia.

Mathis said she's thrilled she and her best friend, Miss Connecticut will compete in the Miss America pageant together.

Mathis graduated from UGA with a degree in broadcast journalism, and hopes to study law at Georgia State University.
