ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

In the briefing portion of their meeting Wednesday, Dougherty County School Board members discussed various issues. One of them was pay for school board members themselves.

DCSS Board member Darrel Ealum is recommending that the board member stipend be increased from the current $250 per month.

He wants to see the stipend increased to $1,000 a month. Ealum says DCSS is long overdue for an increase.  He went on to say that he has been, and will continue, to donate his stipend back to the system.

Board member Dr. Lane Price has voiced her opposition for the increase.  She agrees they are underpaid, but feels an increase is not appropriate at this time.

School board members voted 4 to 3 to prepare a document to the general assembly to increase the stipend.  Carol Tharin, Lane Price and Robert Youngblood voted against it.

The board cannot raise the stipend, they can only ask the general assembly to set it.  It wouldn't go into effect until next July.

 The Proposal would pay:

$1,000 per month to board members

$1,100 per month to co-chair

$1,200  per month to the chair
