Fire and EMS merger approved in Lee County

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Lee County Commissioners Tuesday night approved merging EMS and the fire department. It means paramedics will now be trained as firefighters.

Supporters say it will save tax money and improve the ISO rating for parts of the county which could save property owners on their insurance premiums.

Commission Chairman Rick Muggridge said, "I think the main thing is they're getting the government that they are paying for, and I think that is very important to this board of commissioners is they're getting value for their tax dollars."

Details of the merger must still be worked out. Commissioners approved the initial recommendation from a consultant following his evaluation of the Fire and EMS departments.

The consultant will continue to work on a merger plan.
