Phoebe urges folks to donate during blood drive

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is urging to you donate blood at an upcoming blood drive.

Thursday, June 27th, from 10am until 6pm, folks can stop by or make an appointment to donate blood at Phoebe Putney. Just one blood donation can save three lives.

And during the summer months donations are typically down, which is when they're needed the most.   "We don't put it at the top of our list to go give blood. It's not a priority in our lives and we need to make it a priority," said Linda Van Der Merwe, the VP of Oncology Services for Phoebe.

Donating blood hits especially close to home for Linda.  In February, her husband became sick and was hospitalized.  He had to have an emergency liver transplant and the blood donations helped save his life.

"How I look at it today is every unit of blood was a person that took the time to come, donate their blood so that somebody like my husband could live. I think that they are part of my medical team. I'll never know their names, I'll never know where that blood actually came from, but they were part of the team to help him recover and get through this ordeal."

The event will be held in the solarium of Phoebe's main campus cafeteria. And those who donate during this drive will be registered to win two tickets to Wild Adventures.

Ahead of heavy rain showers and winds projected for our area, the Georgia State Patrol said there's not as many travelers on the roads during this holiday weekend.  "So far I think this attributed to the weather and gas prices being so high, it seems that in our area of the state, traffic has been down some," said Trooper Christopher Jewell, GSP Post 40.
