ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Two death penalty defendants in separate murder cases joined together in a hearing this morning in Dougherty County superior court.

Dontavius Thomas and Allen Robinson, Junior are both being represented by the Office of the Georgia Capital Defender.

Both filed challenges to the makeup of the grand jury that indicted them.

Thomas is charged with gunning down Dougherty County Police Lt. Cliff Rouse in December 2010.

Robinson is a former jailer charged with slitting the throat of 30-year-old Roshanda Dowell in November 2008.

Since both are represented by the same attorneys and both challenging the same issue, their hearings were joined.

That hearing will continue at a future date.

About two dozen of Dowell's family members were present in the courtroom in Albany to hear the proceedings.
