Moody AFB holds first ever Olympic Day event

LAKE PARK, GA (WALB) -

Children from Moody Air Force Base got a feel for what it's like to compete in the Olympics. With airmen cheering them on they all felt like winners. 12-year-old Spencer Vopal says he never thought of competing in the Olympics until now.

"I'm having a lot of fun because I get to hang out with my friends and do all of these activities," said Vopal.

Even a real life Olympian was there to watch the games. International rifle shooter and the first active-duty Soldier to ever compete in the Paralympics, Army Sergeant Joshua Olson, taught the kids a thing or two.

"Just because you go through something hard in your life that doesn't mean your life is over, it just means you get to start a new chapter," said Olson.

Olson lost his leg to a rocket propelled grenade in Iraq in 2003. But says it never stopped him from reaching his dreams. "When I got the head nod like yes you're on the team it was one of the most proudest moments of my life."

While shooting rifles isn't 10-year-old Myla Robinson's forte she might make it on another Olympic team one day. "I like gymnastics!"

With games like curling, stacking, softball, long jump, and tug-of-war, these kids say their favorite was water-slide racing.

Moody officials say they hope to bring back Olympic Day every summer.
