CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

Authorities say 57-year-old Tim Young was crossing Highway 84 East at night last October, when he was struck by a car driven by 47 year-old Lanet Jones.

Jones drove off after she hit him, but returned to the scene 20 minutes later. She was arrested and charged with a DUI, two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of leaving the scene.

Wednesday, Jones was convicted and sentenced five years serving three in the state prison system by Chief Judge A. Wallace Cato.

Her attorney, Jami L. Lewis told WALB that Jones was charged originally with two counts of first degree vehicular homicide, DUI, no insurance, failure to exercise due care to a pedestrian, and leaving the scene of an accident.

He says that Jones was only convicted of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident, and found not guilty of vehicular homicide, failure to exercise due care to a pedestrian and no insurance.

The second charge of vehicular homicide had been previously dismissed by the court at a pretrial hearing on June 13th.

District Attorney Joseph Mulholland commended the officers of Cairo Police Department, Grady Sheriff's Office, and the GBI for their outstanding and diligent work in the Tim Young death case and for the trial term.

Mulholland said that two dozen defendants were arrested, charged, and entered pleas of guilty this week in Grady County.

The defendants were sentenced to serve some time in custody or lengthy probation.
