ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Suspects who run and cause a police pursuit and those who have guns along with illegal drugs are getting a strict warning from the Dougherty Co. District Attorney: more vigorous prosecution for crimes with these circumstances.

That's the purpose of the new Operation Run or Gun. According to a statement from DA Greg Edwards, the defendants will be arrested and charged for every single felony offense they commit. This includes seizure of vehicles used to run from authorities and requests for denial of bond for those found with guns and illegal drugs.

The operation also expedites the process for those indicted in the court system. The GBI will be called for testing of illegal drugs. The cases will be placed on the following month's calendar and the defendant will be arraigned as quickly as possible.

Plea bargaining will not be an option for these kinds of crimes. Edwards' office will seek "significant" prison time for those who have a gun with illegal drugs, or who put the public at risk by running from police.

Sentences for "Run or Gun" crimes will be consecutive to maximize prison and probation time.

Officials hope defendants will "think twice" before engaging in the type of conduct outlined, while keeping the public safer.
