Vigil keeps unsolved murder on people's minds

DOUGLAS, GA (WALB) -

Five months after the mysterious murder of a Coffee County woman, people gathered Tuesday night in Douglas to remember her and to launch a community effort to make sure her case isn't forgotten.

Friends of 49 year-old Edith Sheffield released balloons near where she was last seen leaving work at First National Bank of Coffee County on January 18th. When she got home that night she was murdered and her Broxton home was set on fire.

Loved ones and investigators say they won't put the case to rest. Her friend Cristal Willis organized the vigil and said, "What we're doing today is for healing. It's been five months today, and there's still no answers. And we just want justice for her."

Coffee County Sheriff Doyle Wooten said, "We're gonna keep it on the forefront. We're gonna follow up on any information we receive until we reach the dead end, and the dead end we hope is going to be a conviction in this case."

Edith Sheffield's friends are asking people to display blue ribbons outside their homes and businesses for the next month in her honor and then on 18th of every month until Sheffield's murder is solved.

That case is far from the only unsolved murder of a woman in Douglas. The most recent happened June 7th when 46 year-old Julie May Simpson was strangled and beaten in her home.

In March 2010 32 year-old mother of four Sandra Robinson was killed inside the prepaid cell phone store where she worked.

18 year-old Demea Andrews was gunned down inside Roundtree Park in November 2009.

And in September 2006, 39 year-old Doris Worrell was shot and killed at Jon's Sports Park which she and her husband owned.

Other unsolved murders go back even further, one to 1974. There are rewards to help solve some of the crimes.
