Demolition underway on historic Remerton Mill

Demolition is underway on the historic Remerton Mill in Lowndes County.

It's the last remaining textile mill in south Georgia and protesters are speaking out against the demolition.

The City of Remerton was founded because of the mill's economic success in 1899. It closed in 2005 and has been vacant ever since. The owner couldn't afford renovations and the city couldn't afford to buy it.

The Remerton city council gave the owners permission to tear the building down. The Save The Mill committee fought unsuccessfully to keep the building intact.

"I thought it was very short sighted because not only is it looking back at the past and the connection but it had present day value as something that could anchor future development," said Haley Hyatt, Save The Mill committee member.

The demolition of the mill will take several weeks. Only the iconic smoke stack will remain.
