OCILLA, GA (WALB) -

A man remains hospitalized hours after he was rescued high atop a grain elevator. It happened Tuesday morning in Ocilla where first responders from three counties had to come together to save the man whose arm was trapped in a piece of equipment.

The rescue effort that unfolded 10 stories off the ground. Our camera was there as a Medi-Vac helicopter flew off with an injured man on board.

Moments earlier a viewer took a picture of the worker trapped high atop a grain elevator at Irwinville Peanut and Grain.

Irwin County EMA Director Jerry Edwards says around 7:45 Tuesday morning, an electrical contractor was doing work on a grain elevator when his arm became trapped in the machinery. He was bleeding with nowhere to go.

"We have a team in Fitzgerald that's trained to handle it, GSAR, we activated them first," Edwards said.

They also brought their ladder truck from FFD. But the ladder wouldn't reach the top. Medics tended to the injured worker until a ladder truck from Tifton/ Tift County Fire arrived. "We already had people up there with the GSAR. They had him ready to be put in the ladder truck and brought back down," Edwards said.

The Medi-Vac unit was already on the scene and witnesses say the worker was responding to paramedics when he was flown to a Savannah hospital. "With the mutual, everything came together and worked out fine."

Emergency officials told us they didn't know the name of the injured worker or the extent of the injury. We contacted Irwinville Peanut and Grain but they did not return our phone calls.
