Airport terminal update

The opening of Albany's new airport terminal remains on schedule despite a delay in the ceremonial opening.

Travelers will begin using the new facility at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport two weeks from this Wednesday.

A grand opening celebration will be held a few days later.  The initial opening ceremony was set for next week but had to be delayed because workers had to make repairs following a sprinkler system malfunction.

"Oh it feels good, but people need to understand that this is a ceremonial event, it's not a public event, the public event is when we actually open the building on July 10th, that has not been effected by the sprinkler system discharging so that hasn't changed," said Yvette Aehle, Airport Director, Southwest Georgia Regional Airport.

That ceremonial grand opening celebration is now scheduled for Monday July 15th. The new 25-thousand square foot facility will replace the old terminal that's been in use since 1959.
